Rolly Munro Hollowing Tools
The Munro Hollower is the culmination of over ten years of experimentation with designs for hollowing tools. It has been designed around the robust and inexpensive Technatool hollower cutting tip, which I have coupled with a stainless steel depth gauge.
The Munro Hollowing Tools have been designed around robust, inexpensive and very hard wearing high speed steel cutting tips. These cutters are easy to sharpen with the sharpening jig supplied.
These tools can be configured to hollow a wide range of vessel shapes by using the two stainless steel linkages. The short straight link measures 32mm (1-1/4"), while the long link measures 57mm (2-1/4") and is curved for maximum versatility.
The short depth gauge allows the tool shaft to orientate at sharper angles giving better access to the inside shoulder of hollow forms. The tool has only one screw which only needs to be slackened to make adjustments to the depth gauge. Unlike with other hollowing tools, the shavings exit upwards giving the turner a clear view when monitoring the cutting progress. This is useful when making very fine cuts.
The 38mm x 485mm (19") long aluminium handle is light, and gives excellent support when hollowing a very deep vessel, while leaving the user the option of adding ballast if required.
The handles have comfortable moulded & ribbed grip with a golf ball sized locking knob. The lightness of the handle means the tool is a dream to use on finer cuts where sensitivity is desirable. The 16 mm diameter shaft on the standard tool has an effective length of 410 mm.
The Standard Munro Hollowing set includes the handle, cutterhead, shaft, short link, long link, 3 cutters and the sharpening jig.
The Mini Shank is an addition to the standard tool with Ø 16 mm shaft and is supplied with mini short & long links & a cutter.
The Mini Tool is available as a separate handled tool with Ø 13 mm shaft (effective length 340 mm), short and long links, sharpening jig and 3 cutters.
